ACADEMIC LEVELS AND COURSE RESOURCES

For all languages and levels, students’ language proficiency is determined according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). By the end of the academic year, students are expected to achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Understand grammatical structures and meanings in the target language as detailed in the program. Students starting at a basic level are expected to reach at least upper-intermediate level by the end of the program.

  • Read academic texts in the target language using skimming, scanning, and prediction strategies; identify key details; infer the meaning of unknown words from context; apply important vocabulary in other language skills; identify explicitly stated or inferred ideas.

  • Write academic compositions that provide information, express opinions, solve problems, and demonstrate cause-effect reasoning, using appropriate connectors, grammatical structures, and relevant vocabulary; apply punctuation and spelling rules correctly.

  • Listen to academic lectures; understand the main idea; grasp the structure of the presentation; recognize verbal cues and key terms; take notes while listening; distinguish between weak and strong pronunciations and intonation.

  • Express themselves verbally on various topics; speak both fluently and accurately; organize their speech; participate effectively in discussions; use appropriate connectors and vocabulary.
